Baby Formula Comparison Chart

HiPP vs Holle vs Kendamil UK, side by side

Our Baby Formula Comparison Chart puts every European baby formula we carry from HiPP, Holle and Kendamil UK side by side. In one look you can compare what really matters: milk type, organic and Demeter status, prebiotics and probiotics, carbohydrates, fats and DHA.

Whether you are looking for organic, goat milk or a gentle HA formula for a sensitive tummy, the chart makes it simple to see what each one offers, so you can make the best choice for your baby's nutrition.

Everything here is authentic, premium European formula, made under Europe's strict baby formula rules, with certified organic choices from every brand and fresh stock shipped to your door. Each row is checked against the printed pack, so you can trust what you read.

Each brand started from a different idea, and that idea still shows in every recipe:

HiPP gives you the widest choice.
Organic cow and goat recipes in Dutch, German and UK versions, plus HA, Comfort and Anti-Reflux for sensitive tummies. Most HiPP recipes pair prebiotics with a probiotic.
Holle keeps the recipe simple.
Every Holle formula is EU organic and vegetarian, most are Demeter biodynamic, and the goat recipes leave palm oil out completely.
Kendamil UK starts from whole milk.
The natural milk fat stays in, so there is no palm oil anywhere in the range, the DHA comes from algae, and every can is labeled in English.

Why European formula sets the bar

EU baby formula follows strict European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) rules, including required DHA, staged iron by age, and lactose first in the recipe. Those rules are a higher bar than FDA formula standards and apply to all EU and UK formulas we carry, so you get safety, quality and care for the animals in every bottle. Read more in our EU vs US formula guide.

Safety first

European formula is made under some of the strictest safety rules in the world. Limits for contaminants are written into law, and batches are tested before they ever leave the factory.

Animal welfare

Growth hormones are banned for dairy cows in Europe, something US rules still allow. On the organic farms behind most of our formulas, cows and goats spend as much time as possible outdoors, grazing on organic land.

Premium ingredients

Carefully chosen milk and oils, most of them organic, with no soy and no corn syrup solids in any formula we carry.

Free from GM ingredients

Every formula we sell is free from GM ingredients. On the certified organic ones, the herd's feed must be organic too, so the guarantee reaches back to what the cows and goats eat.

DHA in every bottle

Required in every infant and follow-on formula since February 2020, between 20 and 50 mg per 100 kcal.

Lactose leads

A lactose minimum is written into Europe's infant formula rules, and glucose syrup is capped at a small amount, so corn syrup can never become the main carbohydrate.

Iron by age

Europe sets separate iron levels for infant and follow-on formula, so the amount keeps pace with your baby's age.

A pesticide ceiling

No more than 0.01 mg per kg of any single pesticide, a limit set specifically for infant and follow-on formula.

Why compare European baby formulas?

Every formula on this page is made to Europe's strict baby formula rules, so the essentials are covered whichever one you choose. The recipes are far from identical, though. They start from different milks, follow different stages, come in different packs and languages, carry different certifications, and each brand adds its own key ingredients.

Comparing them side by side is how you find the formula that fits your baby's age and tummy, your family's values and your budget. These are the six things worth looking at:

Formula type

Choosing the right formula type is the first step. European brands offer far more than one recipe, from classic cow's milk and gentle goat milk to vegetarian and specialty formulas for sensitive tummies.Shop all formulas

Stages

For most formulas, the European stage system is the way to go: each stage is made for your baby's age, so you order the one that fits today and move up as your baby grows. A few formulas work a little differently.Shop by stage

Packaging and value

Some formulas come in boxes, others in cans, in sizes from 400 g to 800 g. Many parents have a favorite, and depending on the formula type, a larger pack can be the more cost effective choice.

Label language

Our formulas are made in and for different European countries, so each label speaks the language of the country it was made for. Every label that is not in English is translated for you.English instructions

Certifications

On top of the strict EU rules every formula has to meet, the brands we carry hold many extra certifications, from organic to biodynamic. They rank among the most trusted formulas in the world, so you can choose the certifications that matter most to you. What the seals mean

Key ingredients

Every family has its own priorities. Some parents look for prebiotics and probiotics, others want a formula without palm oil, fish oil or starch. The charts show what is in each formula, and what is not.Compare the ingredients

Formula fact: every formula in these charts contains lactose and DHA, and none of them contain soy, corn syrup solids or GM ingredients. That is the European baseline. The real differences sit in the milk, the fat blend and what each brand adds on top.

HiPP

Germany · family business since 1899 · organic farming since 1956

If you like having options, HiPP is your brand. There are three versions, Dutch, German and UK, all made in Germany for their own market, and between them they cover cow and goat milk plus HA, Comfort and Anti-Reflux recipes. Most parents choose the organic cow formulas, where GOS prebiotics work together with a natural lactic acid culture originally found in breast milk: that probiotic culture is what makes a recipe COMBIOTIK.

Good to know before you order: HiPP takes its DHA from fish oil, so no HiPP formula is vegetarian, and the fat blend includes sustainable organic palm oil; if either matters to you, Holle goat and Kendamil UK leave both out. The Dutch goat and UK recipes carry prebiotics with no probiotics (live cultures), Anti-Reflux carries the probiotic without the prebiotic, and German Stages 1 to 3 add mild organic starch for a creamier, more filling bottle.

Tap a formula name to open its product page. HA, Comfort, Anti-Reflux and Dutch Junior Stage 4 are made without the EU organic leaf. HA is a gentler everyday formula, suitable for sensitive tummies. It is not a medical treatment for a confirmed cow's milk protein allergy. Comfort and Anti-Reflux are special formulas, so please consult with your pediatrician before you start them.

Holle

Baby food since 1933 · Demeter biodynamic farming · vegetarian range

Holle takes the opposite route to HiPP: fewer additions, stricter farming. No Holle recipe adds prebiotics or probiotics, by design, and the DHA comes from algae, so every Holle formula is vegetarian. Every one carries the EU organic leaf as well, and most of them go further with Demeter biodynamic certification, the farming standard that treats the whole farm as one living system.

The four lines each have a clear job. Holle Cow is the classic, made with organic milk from Germany. Cow A2 uses milk with only the A2 beta-casein protein, while the goat recipes, German and Dutch, are palm oil free. PRE and Stage 1 keep lactose as the only carbohydrate, and from Stage 2 onward every Holle recipe adds organic starch and maltodextrin to keep an older baby fuller for longer.

Tap a formula name to open its product page. Demeter covers Cow Stages 1 to 3, Goat PRE to Stage 3 and all three Dutch goat stages. Cow A2 and the two Stage 4 recipes carry EU organic and the German Bio-Siegel. Goat milk still contains milk proteins, so it is not a treatment for a confirmed cow's milk protein allergy.

Kendamil UK

British recipes · whole milk · labels printed in English

Kendamil UK is built on whole milk instead of skimmed milk plus an oil blend, so the natural milk fat stays in. With it comes MFGM: a natural part of the milk fat, also found in breast milk, that supports your baby's brain development. Because the milk brings its own fat, there is no palm oil anywhere in the range, and the DHA comes from algae, which makes every Kendamil UK formula vegetarian.

There are four lines. Organic carries the EU organic leaf, Classic is the original award-winning whole milk recipe, and Goat uses whole goat milk. Comfort is one recipe from birth to 12 months for colic and constipation, with reduced lactose and partly hydrolyzed whey, used under your pediatrician's guidance. Every recipe carries prebiotics, and every can is labeled in English. This is Kendamil UK, a different formulation from the Kendamil sold in US stores.

Every column explained

Plain definitions for each term in the charts. Tap to open.

From age
The youngest age the recipe is made for. European stages run PRE and 1 from birth, 2 from 6 months, 3 from 10 or 12 months depending on the brand, and 4 for toddlers. Formula stages explained.
EU organic
The pack carries the EU organic leaf, so at least 95 percent of the farmed ingredients are organic and the cows or goats eat organic feed. If the leaf is on the pack, the organic rules apply to it.
Demeter
Biodynamic certification on top of EU organic. The whole farm is run as one living system, with its own feed, manure and crop rotation. In this chart only Holle recipes carry it.
Bio-Siegel
Germany's national organic seal. It certifies the same standard as the EU organic leaf, and you will see it on Holle's German labeled formulas. Demeter is the mark that goes further.
Vegetarian
No fish oil. Holle and Kendamil UK take their DHA from algae, so every formula from both brands is vegetarian. HiPP uses fish oil, so no HiPP formula is.
Prebiotics
The food for good gut bacteria. Usually GOS, soft fibers made from milk sugar that feed the bacteria your baby already has. Kendamil UK Classic and Comfort add a little FOS as well.
Probiotics
A natural lactic acid culture that adds to your baby's own gut bacteria. HiPP uses one originally found in breast milk. Holle and Kendamil UK add no probiotics (live cultures).
COMBIOTIK
HiPP's name for GOS prebiotics and a probiotic culture working together; that probiotic culture is what makes a recipe COMBIOTIK. It is printed on the Dutch and German cow packs and on HiPP HA.
Starch
Organic starch as a second carbohydrate next to lactose. It makes the bottle a little thicker and more filling, which is why it shows up from Stage 2 in Holle and from Stage 1 in HiPP German.
Maltodextrin
A carbohydrate made from starch, used next to lactose in Holle Stage 2 and later and in HiPP German Comfort. It adds energy without adding table sugar.
Palm oil free
No palm oil in the fat blend. Palm oil is used to copy palmitic acid, a fat that breast milk also contains. Kendamil UK and Holle goat recipes do without it; HiPP and Holle cow use a sustainable organic one.
DHA source
DHA is an omega 3 fat for brain and eye development, required in all EU formula. It comes from fish oil in HiPP and from algae in Holle and Kendamil UK. DHA vs ARA explained.
Hydrolyzed (HA)
The milk protein is broken down into much smaller pieces, so part of the digestive work is already done. HiPP HA is a gentler everyday formula, suitable for sensitive tummies. It is not a medical treatment for a confirmed cow's milk protein allergy.
A2
A2 beta-casein is a milk protein that many parents find gentler than the more common A1. Goat milk is naturally rich in it, and Holle Cow A2 uses milk from cows that make only A2.
MFGM
Milk fat globule membrane, a natural part of whole milk and breast milk. It stays in Kendamil UK because the recipe starts from whole milk.
Label language
The language the pack is printed in. HiPP UK and Kendamil UK are in English. For every other pack, please find the full English instructions of the label information here: instructions page.

Frequently asked questions

Which baby formula brand is best, HiPP, Holle or Kendamil UK?
The best brand is the one that matches what you care about most, because all three follow the same strict European rules. Choose HiPP for the widest range and specialty recipes, Holle for simple recipes and Demeter farming, and Kendamil UK for whole milk with no palm oil. Please consult with your pediatrician before you switch.
Which European baby formulas are vegetarian?
Every Holle formula and every Kendamil UK formula is vegetarian, because both brands take their DHA from algae. No HiPP formula is vegetarian, since HiPP uses fish oil for its DHA.
Which baby formulas are palm oil free?
Every Kendamil UK formula is palm oil free, and so are Holle's goat formulas, both German and Dutch. HiPP and the Holle cow and A2 recipes use sustainable organic palm oil, which helps copy a fat that breast milk also contains.
Which formulas contain prebiotics and probiotics?
HiPP Dutch and German cow, HiPP HA and HiPP German Comfort contain both. HiPP Dutch Goat and HiPP UK contain prebiotics but no probiotics, and HiPP Anti-Reflux has the probiotic without the prebiotic. Kendamil UK has prebiotics and no probiotics. Holle adds neither, by design.
Which of these formulas are not certified organic?
HiPP HA, Comfort, Anti-Reflux and Dutch Junior Stage 4 are not certified organic, and neither are Kendamil UK Classic, Goat and Comfort. Every Holle formula is EU organic. The simple rule: if the pack carries the EU organic leaf, the organic rules apply to it.
Which baby formulas are Demeter certified?
Only Holle carries Demeter biodynamic certification in our range: Holle Cow Stages 1 to 3, Holle Goat PRE to Stage 3 and all three Holle Dutch Goat stages. Holle Cow A2 and the Holle Stage 4 recipes are EU organic without Demeter.
Which formulas have no starch or maltodextrin?
HiPP Dutch, HiPP UK, HiPP German PRE, HiPP HA and Anti-Reflux, Kendamil UK Organic, Classic and Goat, and every Holle PRE and Stage 1 use lactose with no starch or maltodextrin. HiPP German Stages 1 to 3 add mild organic starch, and every Holle Stage 2 and later adds both starch and maltodextrin.
Which European formulas have labels printed in English?
HiPP UK and Kendamil UK are labeled fully in English. For the Dutch and German packs, please find the full English instructions of the label information here: instructions page.
Is HiPP Dutch Stage 4 organic?
No. HiPP Dutch Junior Stage 4 is a growing-up milk from 24 months and is not certified organic. It still carries COMBIOTIK, with GOS prebiotics and a probiotic culture.
Can these formulas help with a cow's milk protein allergy?
No formula in these charts is made for a confirmed cow's milk protein allergy. HiPP HA is a gentler everyday formula, suitable for sensitive tummies, and goat milk still contains milk proteins. Please consult with your pediatrician in this case.
Is Kendamil UK the same as the Kendamil sold in US stores?
No. They share a name but follow different rulebooks and are formulated differently. We only sell Kendamil UK, made to UK and European standards with the stage system and algae DHA. Read the full comparison.
Can I switch my baby between HiPP, Holle and Kendamil UK?
Yes, many parents do, and because all three follow the same European rules, a switch between them tends to go smoothly. Introduce the new formula gradually, and always consult with your pediatrician in this case, especially if your baby has had tummy trouble.
