HiPP began in 1899 with a father trying to feed his twins. Today it is still owned and run by the Hipp family, now in its fourth generation, and it has farmed organically for seven decades. HiPP was also among the first brands in the world to use organic milk in its formula.

Four generations of the Hipp family

In 1899, Joseph Hipp and his wife Maria were struggling to feed their baby twins. In his bakery, Joseph ground rusks into a fine flour to mix with milk, the first HiPP baby food. In 1932, his son Georg founded the baby food company in Pfaffenhofen, and in 1956 Georg began growing fruit and vegetables on natural soil without chemicals.

In 1967, his sons Claus, Georg and Paulus took over and pushed organic farming much further, persuading farmers in the region to convert. Claus Hipp became one of Germany's best-known organic pioneers. Today his son Stefan Hipp leads the family business and runs his own organic farm, which grows carrots, potatoes and grain and keeps Angus cattle on pasture all year.

Organic farms and animal welfare

HiPP buys its organic raw materials from more than 8,000 organic farmers, who work about 80,000 hectares together. Picture that: close to 200,000 acres, or about 150,000 American football fields, a little more land than all of New York City. The milk for HiPP's organic formula comes only from farms that follow HiPP's own organic farming guidelines.

  • Cows on pasture: the cows graze for more than 200 days a year on natural meadows.
  • Clean meadows: no mineral fertilizers and no chemical synthetic sprays on those meadows.
  • Simple feed: grass, hay and grain, the basis of good organic milk.
  • Independent checks: independent control bodies inspect the farms, on top of HiPP's own testing.

Stricter than organic: quality and research

The EU organic leaf rules out synthetic pesticides on the farm, but it does not set a separate limit for traces in the finished food. That is where the HiPP Organic seal comes in. HiPP tests soil before it signs a field, checks every delivery, and rejects raw materials that pass the law but miss HiPP's own limits. In Germany, one in four HiPP employees works in quality assurance.

COMBIOTIK is HiPP's name for a recipe with GOS prebiotics, soft fibers made from organic lactose, plus a natural lactic acid culture, Limosilactobacillus fermentum CECT 5716, originally found in breast milk. That probiotic culture is what makes a recipe COMBIOTIK. HiPP HA packs print 25 years of immunological research, and HiPP adds Metafolin, a natural form of folate your baby's body can use right away, to most Dutch and German recipes. Read our blog to understand more about Metafolin.

Where HiPP is made

HiPP runs six production sites in Germany and abroad and sells in about 60 countries. The main plant in Pfaffenhofen fills around a million baby food jars a day, with electricity from hydropower and heat from a biomass plant.

HiPP's own infant formula plant is in Herford, in northern Germany. HiPP has run the site fully since 2016 and invested more than 120 million euros to make it one of the most modern infant formula plants in the world. More than 600 people work there; the plant takes in over 200 tons of milk a day and dries it into formula powder, and it holds the EU EMAS environmental certification.

Fun facts about HiPP

  • A grain of salt in a swimming pool: HiPP says its lab is sensitive enough to find that, and it can detect around 1,200 possible residues.
  • Up to 260 checks: that is how many quality controls a HiPP baby food jar goes through, from soil analysis to the finished product.
  • Insects count: since 2018, HiPP has been running a study that compares insect life on organic and conventional fields.
  • Glass you can recycle: HiPP's glass jars are 98% recyclable.

HiPP FAQ

Who makes HiPP baby formula?

HiPP is a German family company from Pfaffenhofen in Bavaria, run today by the fourth generation of the Hipp family.

Is HiPP baby formula organic?

Most of it is. HiPP Dutch Stages 1 to 3, HiPP German, HiPP UK, and HiPP Dutch Goat are certified organic. HiPP HA, Comfort, Anti-Reflux, and the HiPP Dutch Junior are not, so check for the EU organic leaf on the pack.

What is HiPP COMBIOTIK?

What is Metafolin in HiPP formula?

A natural form of folate that your baby's body can use right away. It is in most HiPP Dutch and German recipes and in HiPP UK Stage 2. Read our blog to understand more about Metafolin.

Is HiPP formula vegetarian?

No. HiPP takes its DHA from fish oil. For a vegetarian formula, see Holle or Kendamil UK.

Is HiPP HA formula for a milk allergy?

No. HiPP HA is a gentler everyday formula, suitable for sensitive tummies, but it is not a medical treatment for a confirmed cow's milk protein allergy. Please consult with your pediatrician in this case.

How do I prepare a HiPP bottle?

For HiPP Dutch and German, cool boiled water to about 37°C or 98°F before adding the powder, which protects the probiotics (live cultures). HiPP UK cans print its own steps in English. Please find the full English instructions and label information here: instructions page.
