Description
HiPP Hydrolyzed (HA) Stage 1 Infant Formula can provide hypoallergenic comfort and is designed for newborns up to 6 months of age. HiPP German HA1 works on its own as a complete, nutritious meal, or as a supplement between breast milk feedings. We know how difficult it is to see a little one in distress because of digestion problems or skin reactions. HA formula is designed for babies with a family history of allergies to help reduce the risk of developing allergies. Many parents say in their reviews that it's been a lifesaver for their little one. HiPP HA German Stage Pre is the other option from birth, and HiPP HA German Stage 2 follows from 6 months onwards.
This hypoallergenic formula contains partially hydrolyzed whey protein (no casein), meaning the long-chain milk proteins have been broken down into smaller fragments. That makes the formula easier to digest and lowers the risk of an allergic reaction. Partially hydrolyzed is not the same as extensively hydrolyzed, which is what a baby with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy needs. That is worth settling with a pediatrician before starting. Hydrolyzed whey cannot be certified organic, so this is the one HiPP formula without an organic seal. It also contains palm oil and fish oil.
HiPP German HA1 includes both DHA (13.4mg per 100ml from fish oil) and ARA (13.4mg per 100ml from Mortierella alpina oil), two fatty acids naturally found in breast milk. Lactose is the primary carbohydrate source, as in breast milk. The formula features HiPP's Combiotik blend of prebiotics (GOS from lactose, 0.3g per 100ml) and the natural probiotic Limosilactobacillus fermentum hereditum for digestive comfort and immune support. It contains Metafolin (calcium-L-methylfolate), the bioactive form of folate the body can use directly. It also contains iron for cognitive development, vitamins A, C, and D for a healthy immune system, and long-chain polyunsaturated omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to support brain and neural development.
What is the difference between HiPP HA Stage 1 and HiPP Stage PRE? Both are hypoallergenic and suitable from birth, and in the HA line both use lactose as the only carbohydrate. Stage 1 is marginally more concentrated, at 67 kcal per 100ml against 66, with a 4.4g scoop against 4.3g. Many families start on Pre and move to Stage 1 when a baby wants a little more from each bottle. You can use either one through the first six months. The HA range also comes in a Dutch version, HiPP HA Dutch Stage 1, in an 800g can with Dutch labeling. It matches German Stage 1 rather than Pre, because the Dutch range has no Pre. The ingredients and nutrition are the same on both. The only small exception is phosphorus: 28mg per 100ml on the Dutch can versus 30mg on the German box. With the same recipe in a larger pack, the Dutch can is the better value per bottle.
HiPP German HA1 Combiotic is manufactured in Germany and exceeds the EU requirements set by the European Food Safety Authority for organic certification, which are much stricter than organic standards in the United States. This ensures it is 100% free from steroids, pesticides, soy, refined sugar, growth hormones, and non-medically necessary antibiotics. As your little one matures, we also carry HiPP HA2.

Not sure how much to order? Whether you are stocking up for a few weeks or a couple of months, our formula calculator shows exactly how many cans your baby needs. One tip from experienced parents: babies go through formula faster than you expect, so order your next supply well ahead of time and don’t wait until the current can is running low.
Please note:
- HiPP Hydrolyzed Stage 1 is a specialty formula, not a medical treatment. Before deciding to use it, we advise consulting your pediatrician. Although this product may help babies with cow’s milk protein sensitivity, it may not suit all babies with a diagnosed milk protein allergy.
- HiPP Hydrolyzed (HA 1, 2, and Pre) formulas cannot be certified as organic because the hydrolyzed milk protein is not available in organic form.
If this formula is not 100% what you're looking for, please consider HiPP Hypoallergenic Formula - Stage Pre or one of our other unique Specialty Formulas for Sensitive Tummies. How to make a bottle

- Wash your hands and sterilize the bottle, teat, and cap before use.
- Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool. Do not use water that is too hot, as this may damage the natural lactic acid cultures.
- Pour the desired amount of cooled boiled water into the sterilized bottle (see feeding chart).
- Add the correct number of leveled scoops using only the scoop provided (1 scoop per 30ml water). Scoop size: 4.4g.
- Close the bottle and shake several times vigorously until the powder is fully dissolved.
- Cool to drinking temperature, approximately 37°C (98°F). Test on the inside of your wrist before feeding.
Important Information:
- Only use the scoop provided in the pack.
- Do not make feeds weaker or stronger than indicated by adding extra water/scoops, and do not add anything else to the milk.
- Always freshly prepare formula and do not prepare in advance. Use immediately, and discard leftovers at the end of the feed.
- Do not heat a bottle in a microwave, as hot spots may occur, which could cause scalding.
- All opened formulas should be used within 21 days. Never use a formula beyond its expiration date. The expiration date on the formula box/tin is listed according to European standards: day/month/year
- Avoid storing in areas of high heat or humidity.
