HiPP UK Organic Baby Formula

HiPP UK is the version HiPP makes for the British market, and it is the one range in our store that needs no translating at all. Every word on the can is already in English. One idea runs through all three stages: stay as close as possible to the gold standard, breast milk.

Stage 1 is the starting point. Organic milk, GOS prebiotic fibers made from organic lactose, and DHA and ARA for brain and eye development. Complete nutrition from birth, and it covers the first 6 months.

Stage 2 is the six month step. The same organic base with double the iron, and Metafolin, the same natural folate a mother's milk contains, for the months when solid food is starting.

Stage 3 is the toddler cup. Lighter on calories, with calcium, iron and vitamin D pitched for a child who now eats family meals and drinks milk alongside them.

Behind all three stands HiPP itself: more than 60 years of formula expertise, up to 260 quality checks on every batch, and organic farming that goes beyond what UK and EU law asks. All made in Germany, in 800 g resealable cans.

Three Stages, One Recipe Family Tree

All three come out of the same HiPP ‘kitchen’ with the same organic milk and the same GOS prebiotic fibers. What changes is the iron, the calcium, and how filling the bottle is, because a newborn and a two-year-old need different nutrients and energy.

Everything on the Can Is in English

      Why parents pick UK

Most European formula reaches a US kitchen with a German or Dutch label and a printout beside it. HiPP UK does not. The feeding table, the six preparation steps, the ingredient list, and the storage advice are all printed in English on the can itself.

It is the same formula philosophy HiPP applies everywhere, written to the rules of a different market. If you have family helping with feeds, or a daycare that has to follow the can in front of them, an English can removes an entire category of small mistakes.

      GOS Prebiotics

      Key ingredient

Breast milk carries the building blocks that steer healthy development, and HiPP develops its recipes against that standard. The piece it borrows here is the fiber.

GOS is short for galacto-oligosaccharides, soft fibers made from organic lactose. Their job is simple: feed the good bacteria already living in your baby's gut. A large share of the immune system lives down there, and those bacteria do better with something to eat.

One thing to be straight about: the UK cans carry the prebiotic fibers only. They do not contain probiotics (live lactic acid cultures), so the UK range is not sold under the COMBIOTIK name. That is a recipe decision for the British market, not a quality gap, and it is why the preparation method on a UK can differs from a German one. If you want the probiotics too, HiPP Dutch and HiPP German carry both halves.

Want the wider picture? Our prebiotics and probiotics guide compares brands without the jargon.

      Metafolin® on Stage 2

      Key ingredient

Folate drives cell division and healthy growth. It is one of the most important nutrients in any infant formula.

Most formulas use synthetic folic acid, which a baby's body has to activate before it can be absorbed. Metafolin®, or calcium L-methylfolate, is the bioactive form found in breast milk, ready to use straight away.

On the UK range you will find it listed on Stage 2. Stage 1 and Stage 3 use ordinary folic acid instead. We would rather tell you exactly which can has which than let one label speak for three.

      Inside the Can

Breast milk is the model for every ingredient choice. Alongside the two key ingredients above, this is what completes the recipe.

      Organic milk

The protein foundation, from cows raised under organic rules with as much time outdoors on pasture as possible.

      Organic lactose

A natural, easy-to-digest carbohydrate, and the only sugar in Stage 1. No corn syrup, ever.

      DHA and ARA

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids support brain and eye development from day one.

      And what stays out

No GMOs, no added sugar, no corn syrup, no soy.

Iron per 100 ml across the three HiPP UK stages

      • Stage 1, from birth0.5 mg
      • Stage 2, from 6 months1.0 mg
      • Stage 3, from 12 months0.9 mg

Babies are born with an iron store that lasts roughly half a year. Right on cue, Stage 2 doubles the iron. Stage 3 eases back a little, because a toddler is now getting iron from food as well.

DHA per 100 ml across the three HiPP UK stages

      • Stage 1, from birth13.2 mg
      • Stage 2, from 6 months13.6 mg
      • Stage 3, from 12 months12.0 mg

DHA is required in every EU and UK infant formula, and it stays close to level across all three. Stage 1 is the only one that also lists ARA, at the same 13.2 mg.

Calcium per 100 ml across the three HiPP UK stages

      • Stage 1, from birth51 mg
      • Stage 2, from 6 months77 mg
      • Stage 3, from 12 months73 mg

Calcium climbs by half from Stage 1 to Stage 2 and stays high, which is the bone-building end of the recipe. Stage 3 carries it alongside vitamin D for a toddler who is busy on their feet.

      Certified and Tested

      Certified organic

The cans carry UK organic certification alongside the EU organic leaf. Organic feed, no GMOs, and animal welfare rules behind every litre of milk.

      Up to 260 checks

Every production run passes up to 260 safety checks before release from quarantine. HiPP's laboratory can test for more than 1,200 parameters.

      Beyond the legal bar

HiPP prints on the can that it goes beyond UK and EU standards. That is its own internal bar on purity, sitting on top of the one the law sets.

      Made in Germany

Written for the British market, produced in HiPP's own German plants, the same ones behind the Dutch and German ranges.

Four Things Worth Knowing About HiPP

      It started with twins

In 1899 Joseph and Maria Hipp, a baker's family, were struggling to feed their newborn twins. Joseph's answer was a rusk flour. Other parents asked for it, and a company grew out of it. The story is printed on the back of the can.

      125 years of it

Still a family business, five generations on, and still run from the same Bavarian town. More than 60 of those years have gone into formula specifically.

      Organic before it was fashionable

Georg and Anny Hipp turned the family farm over to organic growing against the conventions of the day. The motto still runs the company: the best for nature, the best from nature.

One of the biggest organic buyers alive

HiPP works with more than 8,000 organic farmers across around 80,000 hectares, which makes it one of the largest organic processors in the world.

      HiPP UK Stage by Stage

This is the recipe HiPP built its name on, in 800 g (28.2 oz) cans with a clip lid and a scoop held inside it. Certified organic, GOS prebiotics at every stage, and no added sugar, corn syrup or soy anywhere in the range.

Stage 1 is complete nutrition from birth, with lactose as its only carbohydrate, exactly like breast milk, plus DHA and ARA at 13.2 mg each per 100 ml.

Stage 2 arrives at six months, once solid food has started: the iron doubles to 1.0 mg, the calcium climbs by half, and Metafolin joins the recipe. It is part of a mixed diet, not the whole of it.

Stage 3 is a step up. It is a growing up milk from 12 months onward, lighter at 60 kcal per 100 ml, as it is part of a mixed diet. The formula can be served in a bottle, a cup or with cereal or stirred into food.

Stage Bottles of 100 ml What makes it different
      Stage 1 — from birth About 62

Lactose only, iron 0.50 mg, DHA and ARA 13.2 mg each. Suitable for the first 6 months

      Stage 2 — from 6 months About 59

Iron doubles to 1.0 mg, calcium 77 mg, and Metafolin joins the recipe

      Stage 3 — from 12 months About 67

Lighter at 60 kcal, iron 0.90 mg, about 250 ml a day alongside family meals.

HiPP UK Compared With the Alternatives

      UK vs HiPP Dutch

Dutch comes in 800 g cans too, and carries both prebiotics and probiotics plus Metafolin at every stage. UK is the one with the English label. Dutch also goes further up the age ladder, with a Stage 4 Junior the UK range does not have.

      UK vs HiPP German

German comes in smaller 600 g boxes, adds a Stage PRE and a mild organic starch from Stage 1, and brings the specialty recipes for colic and spit-up. It is the widest choice of the three, in German.

      UK vs Kendamil

Both are labelled in English. Kendamil builds on whole milk fats and takes its DHA from algae, so it is vegetarian. HiPP UK uses a skimmed milk base with fish oil DHA.

      UK vs a US formula

EU and UK rules require DHA, stage iron by age, and forbid corn syrup solids as the carbohydrate. Those are a higher bar than the FDA sets.

Why US Parents Choose HiPP UK

      Nothing to translate

The single most common reason. Every instruction is in English on the can, so anyone feeding your baby can read it.

      A bigger can

800 g with a clip lid and the scoop stored in the lid, so there are fewer reorders and less rummaging in the powder.

      Organic, simply

Certified organic milk, GOS prebiotic fiber, no added sugar and no corn syrup. A short ingredient list you can actually read.

      The same factories

Made in Germany by HiPP itself. Different market, same company and the same quality programme behind it.

      Why European Baby Formula?

      Stricter ingredient rules

EU and UK certified organic formulas contain no GMOs, artificial flavors or artificial preservatives, with strict limits on pesticides and heavy metals.

      Batch-level testing

Testing every batch is standard across European organic brands. Retained samples are kept for years, and a batch is released only after it passes every checkpoint.

      A long track record

Europe has produced organic baby formula for most of a century. HiPP alone has more than 60 years of formula experience.

      A higher legal bar

EU and UK baby formula rules include required DHA, staged iron by age, and no corn syrup solids. Read more in our EU vs US formula guide.

      Frequently Asked Questions

Stage 1 is complete nutrition from birth and can be used until the 6th month. Stage 2 is the follow-on step from 6 months, once solid food has started. Stage 3 is a growing up milk from 12 months, meant as a drink alongside family meals rather than as a baby’s main nutrition. Our Formula Finder narrows it down in about a minute.

Same company, same factories, different recipe written for a different market. All three are made in Germany. The UK cans are labelled entirely in English and carry GOS prebiotics. The Dutch and German ranges add probiotics (live lactic acid cultures) on top of the prebiotics, which is what HiPP calls COMBIOTIK. Our parent guides lay the three side by side.

No. The UK cans carry GOS prebiotic fibers only, with no probiotics (live cultures), so the UK range is not COMBIOTIK. Prebiotics are the food that feeds the good bacteria a baby already has. If you want the probiotics as well, HiPP Dutch and HiPP German are the ranges that have both.

No, and that is the point of this range. Every word on a HiPP UK can is in English already: the feeding guide, the preparation steps, the ingredients and the storage advice. Nothing has to be looked up or translated at two in the morning.

Yes. The cans carry UK organic certification alongside the EU organic leaf, and the milk comes from organic farms. HiPP prints that it goes beyond UK and EU standards, which is its own internal bar on purity testing sitting on top of the legal one.

Metafolin is calcium L-methylfolate, the bioactive form of folate also found in breast milk, which a baby’s body can use straight away. On the UK range it is listed on Stage 2 only. Stage 1 and Stage 3 use ordinary folic acid. The Dutch and German ranges carry Metafolin at every stage. Read our blog to understand more about Metafolin.

Follow the can, because the UK method differs from the German one. Boil one litre of fresh water and leave it to cool for no longer than 30 minutes. Never use artificially softened or repeatedly boiled water. Measure the water into a sterilised bottle, add the correct number of level scoops using the scoop leveller, shake for about 15 seconds, then cool the bottle under cold running water to drinking temperature, about 37°C or 98°F, and always test it before feeding.

No. The cans say so in plain English, because the DHA comes from fish oil. Our vegetarian collection gathers the options that use algae DHA instead.

Three weeks. Store it somewhere cool and dry with the clip lid closed, and do not refrigerate it. Made up bottles are a different matter: prepare each feed fresh, and throw away anything your baby has not finished within two hours.

Go gradually. Swap one bottle a day, then add another every couple of days. Some babies take to it at once, others need a few days, and a small change in stool is normal while a tummy adjusts. Talk to your pediatrician before you start.
